Welcome to Tupelo Water &
Light Department
At Tupelo Water & Light Department, our mission is to supply safe, reliable
and cost-effective utility service to our community. We provide electric,
water and wastewater services to approximately 15,000 residences, businesses
and industry in Tupelo and parts of Lee County.
Power
In Tupelo
Tupelo Water & Light Department enjoys the distinct honor of being
the first city in American to receive electricity from the landmark Tennessee
Valley Authority in 1934. Today, Tupelo remains on the cutting edge of
regional public power supply. The benefits of the progressive program
touch every aspect of residents' lives. Ample, inexpensive electricity
has made Tupelo one of the more brightly lit cities in the country, glimmering
like a small constellation in the night. It contributes to a low crime
rate, promotes traffic safety, and makes for an aesthetically pleasing
and inviting city after dark. The early success of Tupelo's program led
other cities throughout the Tennessee Valley to follow Tupelo's lead and
TVA
today remains the cheapest source of power available in the region.
A Public Utility
Tupelo Water & Light Department operates as a self-sustaining arm
of city government. The company is a public utility whose assets and operations
are paid for through its utility rates -- not tax money. The day-to-day
operation of the water and electrical power distribution systems of Tupelo
is supervised by a General Manager who is employed by Tupelo's Mayor and
City Council. The General Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations.
