General Fire Inspection Requirements

 

How do I become a fire fighter for the City of Tupelo?

The first step is to complete an application that can be obtained through the Human Resources Department or download an application.  Applicants must them meet the general requirements of the job description.

            High school diploma or GED

            18 years of age

            Possess a valid driver’s license

Applicants will be notified of the date and time of all testing requirements.  The test phase consists of three parts; physical abilities, written exam, and an interview board.  There are normally two to three weeks between the physical abilities test and the written test.  Each phase must be successfully completed before an applicant may move to the next phase.  Testing is normally conducted once a year

What is the insurance class rating for the City and will the department respond to fires outside the city limits?

The insurance class rating for the City is a 5.  The fire department is not the primary responding unit outside the city limits.  The department will provide mutual assistance in the county only at the request of primary responding department.

Can I burn yard waste or rubbish within the City Limits?

The City Ordinance prohibits the burning of waste or rubbish.

I locked my keys in the car; will the Fire Department unlock my car?

The Fire Department normally only unlocks cars when they present a hazard to an occupant or the surrounding area, such as a child locked in a car or the motor is running.

What is the current code version used by the City?

The City adopted the 2006 International Fire Code and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code, 2006 Ed.

Can fireworks be sold in the City of Tupelo?

The code prohibits the sale, storage, distribution, possession  and discharge of fireworks within the city limits.  Exceptions are professionally qualified and insured pyrotechnics operators.  A fireworks permit is required.

 What are the general requirements to pass a fire safety inspection?

The requirements vary from one occupancy class to another.  In general,  you must have a minimum of one working fire extinguisher, exit/emergency lighting, address numbers readable from the street, and meet the occupancy specific requirements.  For more specific information please contact the Fire Prevention Division.
